The STEMchats Speaker Series Initiative seeks to inspire, engage, and educate students (ages 14-22) about various STEM topics by hosting monthly speaker sessions. Each month, we will feature a STEM professional in the field of tech, academia, medicine, and beyond. We aim to highlight speakers from a diverse range of personal and educational backgrounds.
Our goal is to encourage students to pursue different educational and professional paths that they would have otherwise not thought was a possibility. In addition, students will be able to learn more about the field they're interested in directly through a professional in that field.

Webinar Topic: "My Journey Through STEM" presented by Andrew Basilio, a PhD Candidate in Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University.
Andrew Basilio is currently a 4th year PhD candidate in biomedical engineering at Columbia University. He also completed his BS and MS in bioengineering at UCSD. Between completion of his BS and MS, he worked at Illumina as a systems engineer. In his free time he likes to surf, play piano, lift weights at the gym, and do martial arts (tae kwon do, karate, Brazilian jiu jitsu). He also enjoys the outdoors, especially camping with friends and deep sea fishing with friends.
In this Speaker Series webinar Professor Joseph Falson presented a talk on "What is fundamental research and how is it important?", addressing his research in Materials Physics. Prof. Falson also discussed his international journey and career in science.
Joseph Falson grew up in Australia where he completed his Bachelor of Science. He then moved to Japan to complete his PhD at the University of Tokyo to learn about crystal growth and materials physics. After graduation, he joined the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart, Germany as a researcher and studied the physics of electrons at low temperature. He is now a professor of Materials Science at Caltech.
